And She Talked to US

By: Joan (Surrey Volunteer)

We had encountered this young woman before on our weekly street walks. She was usually cautiously friendly stating that too much “God talk” made her uncomfortable and we always respected that.

Our meeting last night however was supremely co-ordinated by the Holy Spirit. Started with the prayer card (as it often does) which was the 23 Psalm. She read it herself which she usually doesn’t and the words of that beautiful Psalm had special meaning for her. She was moved to tears saying repeatedly, “ This is more than just a coincidence.” We assured her that yes it certainly was more than just a coincidence. The Holy Spirit was with us right there. We weren’t together by chance.

She asked her friends to leave and there we were the three of us on the street. We talked for a long time as she opened her heart to share her feeling with us. She spoke of being young and on the street and that when she says things they get thrown back at her (by others on the street) because she’s young. She said she works at saying things simply so that others can better understand her. Indeed she spoke to us with great clarity, honesty and openness. She was sorry to be crying and thought that was a sign of weakness. We told her she was safe with us. We were her friends. It was ok.

Just that morning she had been pepper sprayed and called a parasite by a police officer. The name calling really hurt her. We told her, “God loves you right now, just the way you are. He loves you and he loves us in the same way. You are special to him.”

It was a privilege to witness to her of God’s love. We felt honored to be able to share that experience with her and we pray that God will continue to work in her life. For tonight she had trusted us and allowed us to get close to her with God’s message.
